The Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme 2026 will cover eligible autos in Hyderabad’s Core Urban Region. The scheme aims to cut air pollution and reduce fuel costs for auto drivers.

The government will implement the Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme 2026 in phases. It will offer eligible owners two options to shift from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles.

Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme 2026 offers two options

Under the first option, owners can retain their existing auto chassis. They can replace the petrol or diesel engine with an AIS 123 approved electric conversion kit. The scheme allows fixed battery and swappable battery options through approved vendors.

Under the second option, owners can surrender their old petrol or diesel auto. They can then purchase a new factory manufactured and type approved electric passenger three wheeler.

The government will provide financial assistance of up to ₹1.5 lakh per eligible vehicle. For new electric autos, approved dealers will deduct the subsidy from the vehicle’s final on road price.

The Core Urban Region currently has 18,766 eligible petrol and diesel autos. Of these, 11,254 run on diesel and 7,512 run on petrol.

The government has linked the scheme with its Telangana Rising Vision 2047 plan. The broader goal involves cleaner urban transport and a gradual shift towards electric mobility.

The scheme also seeks to lower the daily fuel burden on drivers. Electric autos can reduce dependence on petrol and diesel and may also reduce operating expenses.

The government expects the shift to help improve Hyderabad’s air quality. It can also reduce vehicle noise in busy urban areas.

The initiative follows Telangana’s wider push for electric public transport. The state has already introduced electric buses in parts of its transport network.

The scheme will focus on eligible vehicles with valid registrations in the notified CURE area. Officials will oversee implementation through a structured monitoring system. A state level steering committee will guide the programme, while implementation and district level committees will handle approvals and execution.

The government expects the phased conversion to support both environmental goals and the livelihoods of auto drivers. It also aims to make Hyderabad’s public transport cleaner and more sustainable.
