Hyderabad, July 21: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Supremo and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly criticized law enforcement agencies and sections of the media following the acquittal of Mohammed Majid, who spent 17 years in jail in connection with a 2006 terror case.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Owaisi expressed deep concern over the irreparable damage caused to innocent lives due to flawed investigations and media trials.
“Innocent people are sent to jail and then years later, when they are released, there is no possibility for reconstruction of their lives. From the last 17 years, these accused have been in jail. They haven’t stepped out even for a day. The majority of their prime life is gone,” he wrote.
Asaduddin Owaisi highlighted the systemic failure of investigating agencies, especially in high-profile terror cases, where he said the presumption of guilt overshadows due process. He criticized the police for holding press conferences that often shape public opinion prematurely and condemned certain media outlets for acting as “nationalist judges” during prime-time debates.

The Hyderabad MP also referred to the tragic personal cost of incarceration in the case of Mohammed Majid, whose wife passed away while he was imprisoned — without even a chance for a final conversation.
“Please remember which parties were ruling Maharashtra in 2006. They are also responsible for disregarding complaints of torture,” he added, calling out the political leadership of the time for failing to uphold basic human rights.
Owaisi’s comments come in the wake of the Bombay High Court acquitting several accused in the 2006 Malegaon blast case, citing lack of evidence and procedural lapses. His statement underscores the growing debate around wrongful arrests, prolonged trials, and the need for accountability in India’s criminal justice system.
Owaisi urged the judiciary, civil society, and the media to reflect on the consequences of rushing to conclusions in sensitive cases and called for mechanisms to rehabilitate those proven innocent after long periods of incarceration.
