Hyderabad, Sept. 21: Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday criticised restrictions on Ganesh idol immersion at Hyderabad’s Tank Bund.
Sanjay condemned the detention of Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi representatives protesting against the restrictions.
Speaking to the media in Hyderabad, he said devotees should be allowed to continue the traditional immersion at Tank Bund.
He demanded the unconditional release of all those detained, including Samithi general secretary Ravinuthala Shashidhar.
Bandi Sanjay Demands Permission For Tank Bund Immersion
Sanjay said Ganesh immersion at Tank Bund has been a longstanding tradition in Hyderabad.
He argued that the practice should be allowed this year as well.
His remarks came after Samithi members protested against barricades installed along Tank Bund on Monday.
The protesters attempted to remove iron barricades erected by the GHMC and Hyderabad City Police.
Police intervened as members tried to dismantle the structures fixed to the lake railings.
Authorities have cited Telangana High Court directions while restricting certain idol immersions at Hussain Sagar.
Hyderabad Police have also warned against the immersion of Plaster of Paris idols in Hussain Sagar and said immersion should not be carried out along Tank Bund.
At the same time, civic authorities have arranged designated immersion points and additional safety measures across Hyderabad.
Officials have identified water bodies for immersion and deployed swimmers, rescue teams and other personnel to manage the crowds.
The dispute over Tank Bund immersion has therefore become a point of contention between the organisers and authorities ahead of the main immersion procession.
