Hyderabad, Oct 18 (Maxim News): The BC Joint Action Committee’s state-wide bandh for 42% reservations in local bodies led to tense scenes in Hyderabad’s Nallakunta area as protestors targeted commercial outlets that remained open, according to local accounts shared from the ground.
The bandh call, issued to push for enhanced BC reservations, continued across the state with wide political and social backing.
Support for the BC bandh came from major political parties, including Congress, BRS, BJP, CPI, CPM, TJS, CPI(ML) New Democracy, and Maoist-affiliated groups, as well as organizations like MRPS, Mala Mahanadu, and several Adivasi, Girijana, minority, student, people’s associations, and intellectuals. Meanwhile, tensions spiked in Nallakunta when protestors confronted establishments that did not close for the shutdown.
Protestors hurled large cement blocks at a Bajaj showroom and at Raghavendra Tiffin Center for staying open during the bandh. As a result, the showroom’s glass panes shattered and debris scattered across the frontage. Then, agitators moved to a nearby petrol bunk that remained open and attacked it. They allegedly damaged the fuel dispensing machines in the forecourt area before dispersing.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving alerts about the violence. Officers moved swiftly to bring the situation under control and to prevent further escalation. They worked to calm tempers, cleared the affected areas, and restored movement. Officials focused on stabilizing the locality and deterring additional attempts to target businesses during the bandh period.
Elsewhere, the bandh continued to draw participation from BC organizations and allied groups who pressed for their demand of 42% reservations in local bodies. However, the Nallakunta incidents stood out as a flashpoint, highlighting how enforcement and public order challenges can arise during shutdown calls. Later, authorities stayed on the ground to monitor the situation and to ensure that normalcy returned to the affected stretches. (Maxim News)
