- BRS-CPI alliance secures chairperson and vice-chairperson posts
- Election held amid security after delays and political tensions
Hyderabad, April 4: The BRS-CPI alliance secured both chairperson and vice-chairperson posts in Kyathanpalli municipality, despite what it described as hurdles from the Congress. The election took place during a special meeting held on Saturday under tight security.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi councillor Godishela Sandhya Rani was elected chairperson of the 22 member municipality. Meanwhile, Communist Party of India councillor Mittapalli Saritha became vice-chairperson. The alliance secured victory with an absolute majority of 14 councillors.
The election process began at 11 am and concluded by noon. Authorities deployed around 600 police personnel at key junctions and near the civic body office. This ensured smooth conduct of the process after earlier disruptions.
However, Indian National Congress attempted to win the posts with support from its seven councillors, an independent member, Labour Minister Dr G Vivek, and Peddapalli MP G Vamshi Krishna, who joined as an ex officio member. Despite these efforts, they stayed away from the election once it became clear they lacked the numbers.
Earlier, the election process faced repeated delays. Initially, the meeting scheduled for February 17 was postponed due to lack of quorum. Later, it was again halted after Congress councillors allegedly assaulted BRS-CPI members during proceedings. These incidents led to a nearly two month suspension.
Subsequently, the State Election Commission ordered fresh elections for Saturday after BRS leaders approached the High Court. Meanwhile, BRS district president Balka Suman arranged a camp for councillors to ensure unity within the alliance.
The Congress reportedly tried to attract alliance councillors by offering development projects. It also allegedly used police action against BRS leaders. On February 18, Suman and 13 others, including former Zilla Parishad vice-chairperson Mula Reddy, were arrested in Chennur. They faced charges such as unlawful assembly, rioting, and obstructing police duties. Suman was later released on bail on March 4.
Therefore, the successful conduct of the election marks the end of prolonged uncertainty in the municipality.
