India Becomes World’s 4th Most Equal Country: World Bank Hails Modi Govt’s Inclusive Growth
Hyderabad/Delhi, July 5 (Maxim News): In a landmark achievement for India’s socio-economic progress, the country has been ranked the world’s fourth most equal society, according to the latest World Bank report. The report places India’s Gini Index at 25.5, indicating strong income equality, just behind the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Belarus.
The Gini Index is a widely used indicator to measure inequality in income, consumption, or wealth across a population. A score of 0 indicates perfect equality, while 100 signifies absolute inequality. India’s score of 25.5 reflects one of the lowest levels of income inequality globally, significantly outperforming countries like China (35.7) and the United States (41.8).

Notably, India is now more equal than all G7 and G20 nations, including many developed economies.
A Remarkable Milestone for a Diverse Nation
This achievement comes as India solidifies its position as the world’s fourth-largest economy, while also managing to ensure equitable distribution of growth. The report acknowledges that economic gains are reaching wider sections of society, even in rural and underdeveloped areas.
The World Bank’s Spring 2025 Poverty and Equity Brief underscores India’s success, stating:
“171 million Indians have been lifted out of extreme poverty over the past decade.”
The proportion of people living on less than $2.15 a day—the global benchmark for extreme poverty until June 2025—fell sharply from 16.2% in 2011–12 to just 2.3% in 2022–23. Under the updated $3.00-a-day threshold, this figure is still modest at 5.3%.
Key Factors Driving India’s Equality Progress
According to the government, India’s impressive Gini Index ranking is no accident, but the result of consistent, targeted policies aimed at reducing poverty and promoting inclusion. Some of the most impactful schemes include:
- PM Jan Dhan Yojana – Universal financial inclusion
- Aadhaar & Digital Identity – For efficient delivery of welfare
- Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) – Transparent subsidy system
- Ayushman Bharat – World’s largest healthcare program
- Stand-Up India & PM Vishwakarma Yojana – Promoting entrepreneurship
- PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) – Free ration for the poor
“What sets India apart is its ability to balance economic growth with social protection. Programs like DBT and Ayushman Bharat have plugged leakages, while initiatives like PM Vishwakarma empower citizens to create wealth on their own terms,” said a senior government official.
Global Recognition of India’s Inclusive Model
The World Bank report positions India as a model for other developing nations, emphasizing how targeted interventions and digital innovation can create inclusive and resilient societies.
This report reinforces India’s global image as a nation that is not only growing fast but growing fairly.
