Hyderabad: India strongly criticised Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council after Islamabad raised the Jammu and Kashmir issue. India said Pakistan was now facing the consequences of supporting and nurturing terrorist groups for its own interests.
India’s representative to the UN, Anupama Singh, firmly rejected Pakistan’s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir. She said Jammu and Kashmir is, and will always remain, an integral part of India.
She stated that the only unresolved issue is Pakistan’s continued occupation of Indian territories in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. She also accused Pakistan of denying basic freedoms to people living in those areas and alleged that they face violence and repression.
India Responds to Pakistan at UN
Referring to recent unrest in Rawalpindi and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Anupama Singh said the incidents reflected Pakistan’s internal challenges. She remarked that Pakistan had long supported extremist elements for political purposes and was now suffering from the same forces.
She further pointed to statements made by Pakistan’s Defence Minister regarding support for militant groups. According to India, it is contradictory for Pakistan to present itself as a victim of terrorism while continuing to face allegations of sheltering such elements.
India also reiterated its position on the Indus Waters Treaty. Anupama Singh said the agreement had become outdated and maintained that there would be no change in India’s stance.
She added that countries which use terrorism as a policy tool cannot expect benefits based on goodwill and friendly relations. The remarks came in the backdrop of India’s decision to suspend the treaty following the Pahalgam terror attack.
The exchange once again highlighted the sharp differences between India and Pakistan at international forums, particularly on issues related to terrorism and Jammu and Kashmir.
