New Delhi, July 12: India’s first bullet train will begin phased operations from August 15, 2027, starting with the Surat-Bilimora section of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the 508 km Mumbai Ahmedabad corridor will open in stages. He named the Surat Bilimora section as the first operational stretch. The ministry said nearly 80 percent of the project is complete. Construction is progressing to meet the August 15, 2027 target.
Vaishnaw said remaining sections — Vapi Surat, Vapi Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad Thane and Ahmedabad Mumbai — will open progressively. The corridor will cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad and introduce advanced rail technology. The ministry added the project will boost regional connectivity and spur economic growth along the route.
The minister also announced three proposed high speed corridors centred on Hyderabad: Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Chennai and Hyderabad-Bengaluru. He said a Hyderabad Mumbai link is planned too. Vaishnaw said these corridors will change Hyderabad’s landscape and improve connectivity across Telangana.
Additionally, the ministry highlighted station upgrades under the Nav Nirmaan programme. It said 261 stations are undergoing redevelopment nationwide. In Telangana, Secunderabad, Begumpet and HITEC City are among stations slated for modernization.
