KTR Contempt Petition Hearing In Supreme Court Tomorrow

  • KTR’s contempt case against Telangana Speaker listed for Monday
  • Supreme Court to hear both BRS and Speaker’s petitions together

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao’s (KTR) contempt petition against Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on Monday. The petition accuses the Speaker of delaying action on the disqualification of MLAs who defected from the party, violating the time frame fixed by the apex court earlier.

According to the petition, the Speaker failed to take a decision within the three-month period set by the Supreme Court. This delay, the petition stated, amounts to a violation of the court’s previous order on the matter. KTR approached the Supreme Court seeking action against the Speaker for contempt, arguing that such non-compliance undermines the authority of the court.

Meanwhile, the Speaker’s office has also filed an additional petition before the Supreme Court. The Speaker sought more time to complete the inquiry process related to the disqualification of the MLAs. This request for extension will also be heard alongside KTR’s contempt plea in Monday’s hearing.

Legal observers have noted that the simultaneous hearing of both petitions will determine whether the Speaker receives an extension or faces directions from the court to expedite the disqualification process. The outcome of the hearing is expected to clarify the timeline for a decision on the disputed MLAs and could have political implications for the Telangana Assembly.

The Supreme Court’s decision on Monday will therefore be crucial in assessing compliance with its earlier directive. Both sides are expected to present their arguments before the bench as the case once again brings the focus on the anti-defection issue in the state.
