Hyderabad, May 31: BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao on Saturday questioned Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over the alleged failure of the Telangana government to fulfil promises made to auto drivers before the 2023 Assembly elections.
Reacting to a video shared by Rahul Gandhi highlighting his interaction with auto drivers regarding rising fuel prices, KTR asked the Congress leader to first explain the status of commitments made to auto drivers in Telangana.
“Before making new promises in Delhi, can Rahul Gandhi explain what happened to the assurances given to Telangana’s auto drivers during the Assembly elections?” KTR questioned.
Welfare Board, Financial Assistance Yet to Materialise
In a statement, KTR recalled that the Congress had promised to establish a dedicated welfare board for auto drivers and provide annual financial assistance of Rs 12,000 to every driver.
According to him, nearly 30 months have passed since the Congress government assumed office in Telangana, but the promised welfare measures have not been implemented.
He alleged that auto drivers continue to face financial hardships despite the assurances made during the election campaign.
Raises Concerns Over Drivers’ Welfare
The BRS leader further claimed that more than 100 auto drivers had died by suicide since the Congress came to power in the State, attributing the situation to economic distress and unfulfilled promises.
KTR said the Congress leadership should focus on implementing commitments made in Telangana instead of announcing new welfare assurances elsewhere.
Criticism of Congress Leadership
Questioning the Congress party’s approach, KTR accused the government of neglecting the concerns of auto drivers and engaging in political rhetoric without delivering on its promises.
“Why make fresh promises in Delhi when the promises made to Telangana’s auto drivers remain pending?” he asked.
The Congress government has not yet officially responded to KTR’s latest remarks regarding the welfare measures promised to auto drivers.
