Hyderabad, May 31: The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (TGDCA) has uncovered the illegal sale of habit-forming drugs, including codeine-based cough syrups and tramadol capsules, at a medical shop in Ramanthapur and seized stocks along with related records during a surprise raid.
Acting on specific information, Drug Control Administration officials conducted an inspection at SVR Medicals in Ramanthapur, Uppal mandal of Medchal-Malkajgiri district on Saturday. The medical shop was being operated by V. Raju and V. Savitha.
According to TGDCA officials, the inspection revealed that the operators were allegedly selling habit-forming medicines, including codeine-containing Tossex cough syrup and tramadol-containing Spasmo Proxyvon Plus capsules, without following mandatory legal procedures.
Major Violations Detected
During the raid, officials seized 20 bottles of Tossex cough syrup, each containing 120 ml of codeine-based formulation. Authorities also confiscated records related to the sale and distribution of the drugs.
The inspection team found several violations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, including:
- Sale of Schedule H1 and habit-forming drugs without valid prescriptions issued by Registered Medical Practitioners.
- Failure to maintain mandatory Schedule H1 drug registers.
- Non-maintenance of sales records and bills.
- Inability to produce required documentation during inspection.
- Other violations related to storage and sale of regulated medicines.
Health Risks of Drug Abuse
The TGDCA warned that the misuse of drugs such as codeine and tramadol poses serious health risks. These substances are frequently abused for their sedative and intoxicating effects, leading to addiction and dependence.
Officials stated that prolonged misuse or overdose can result in severe complications, including respiratory depression, seizures, loss of consciousness, coma, and even death.
Legal Action Initiated
The Drug Control Administration emphasized that the illegal sale of habit-forming medicines is a serious offence under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Such violations are punishable with imprisonment of up to two years, along with other legal penalties.
The department said further investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken against those involved.
Public Asked to Report Violations
TGDCA urged citizens to report illegal sale of prescription and habit-forming drugs. Complaints can be lodged through the department’s toll-free helpline 1800-599-6969 during working hours from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The administration reiterated its commitment to preventing drug abuse and ensuring that regulated medicines are sold strictly in accordance with the law.
