PM Modi Arrives in Brazil for 17th BRICS Summit and Historic State Visit

Hyderabad/Rio de Janeiro, July 6 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Brazil on a four-day official visit, marking the fourth leg of his five-nation tour. During the trip, he will participate in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro and undertake a state visit to Brasilia at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Galeão International Airport upon his arrival on Saturday evening (local time). In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister expressed optimism about the visit:

“Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I will take part in the BRICS Summit and later go to their capital, Brasilia, for a state visit on the invitation of President Lula. Hoping for a productive round of meetings and interactions during this visit.”

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, also shared updates, stating:

“Committed to BRICS partnership! PM @narendramodi lands in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit. #BRICS2025”

Key Agendas and Bilateral Talks

This is PM Modi’s fourth visit to Brazil and the first state visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brazil in nearly six decades. He is scheduled to participate in BRICS meetings on July 6 and 7, followed by official engagements in Brasilia.

During the visit, Modi will hold bilateral discussions with President Lula focused on enhancing strategic cooperation in sectors such as:

  • Trade and investment
  • Defence and space
  • Critical minerals and energy
  • Pharmaceuticals and health
  • Technology and innovation
  • Agriculture and food security
  • People-to-people exchanges

Earlier, the Prime Minister visited Argentina, where he held talks with President Javier Milei and discussed expanding trade and cooperation in key areas including defence, energy, and mining.

BRICS Expansion and Global Significance

This year’s BRICS Summit is significant, as the grouping has expanded beyond its founding members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, making it a powerful bloc representing emerging economies across multiple continents.

PM Modi is expected to engage in several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, furthering India’s diplomatic ties with key global players.
