Supreme Court Refuses Urgent Hearing on Bakrid Plea

New Delhi, May 26 (Maxim News) : The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant an urgent hearing on a petition seeking strict nationwide implementation of cow slaughter prohibition laws ahead of Bakrid celebrations.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi declined to entertain the plea for immediate listing and questioned the timing of the petition.

During the hearing, advocate Varun Kumar Sinha mentioned the matter before the bench and requested that the petition be listed urgently, stating that Bakrid festival would be observed in two days.

Bakrid festival is scheduled the day after tomorrow. The petition seeks directions for strict implementation of cow slaughter prohibition laws. Can the matter be listed tomorrow?” the lawyer requested before the court.

Reacting strongly, the Chief Justice observed, “Did you remember this issue only one day before the festival?” The bench further stated that there was no extraordinary urgency in the matter and dismissed the request for an urgent hearing.

The Supreme Court then refused to include the petition in the emergency hearing list.

Petition sought nationwide enforcement of cow slaughter laws

The petition was filed by former All India Hindu Mahasabha vice president Satish Kumar Agarwal. In his plea, he sought directions for strict enforcement of laws banning cow slaughter and protection of cows and their progeny across the country.

The petitioner also urged the apex court to direct all state governments to regulate slaughterhouses strictly according to existing legal provisions.

The plea sought implementation of preventive measures to stop illegal slaughter activities during the Bakrid festival period.

However, the Supreme Court made it clear that it was not inclined to pass urgent directions during the festival period without detailed consideration of the matter.

The court’s observations came amid discussions in several states regarding enforcement of cow protection laws ahead of Bakrid celebrations. (Maxim News)
