Supreme Court Values Homemakers’ Work At Rs 30,000 Per Month

The observation was made by a Bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice K. V. Viswanathan Singh* while hearing a compensation matter related to a road accident.

The court emphasized that homemakers make a significant contribution to society through household management, child care, and family welfare. It noted that the absence of a formal salary does not diminish the economic value of their work.

According to the judgment, compensation in motor accident cases involving homemakers should reflect the value of the services they provide to their families and society.

The Bench observed that homemakers play a vital role in nurturing families and supporting social development. Therefore, their contribution cannot be ignored while determining compensation for death or disability arising from road accidents.

The ruling came while deciding a long pending case linked to a road accident in Punjab in 2001. After the death of a woman in the accident, her husband and three children approached the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal seeking compensation.

The matter subsequently moved through various judicial forums before reaching the Supreme Court. The apex court ultimately ruled in favour of the family and directed that compensation be awarded based on the value of the homemaker’s contribution.

The judgment is expected to have a significant impact on future motor accident compensation cases involving homemakers across the country.
