Telangana Makes Landmark Contribution To Bird Diversity Research With Study On 452 Species

Hyderabad, July 27 (Maxim News) — In a significant breakthrough for ornithology in India, Telangana has etched its name into the records of bird conservation with a comprehensive new study detailing 452 species of birds found across the state. Conducted by researchers from Osmania University, the study has been published in the prestigious Journal of Threatened Taxa, highlighting Telangana’s rich and diverse avian population.

The research was spearheaded by Prof. Chelmala Srinivasulu, a renowned wildlife biologist from OU’s Department of Zoology, and Sriram Reddy, a citizen scientist and active member of Hyderabad Birding Pals. The paper, released on July 26, is being celebrated as one of the most extensive and detailed avifaunal checklists of any Indian state.

A Milestone in Indian Ornithology

Described as a “comprehensive report on the birds of Telangana,” the research not only catalogs native and migratory bird species but also records rare sightings and first-ever documented occurrences. Notably, the study includes the first Indian record of the Spur-Winged Lapwing and mentions the presence of critically endangered species such as the Indian Vulture and Lesser Florican, both of which are internationally threatened.

“This research is a milestone in understanding Telangana’s ecological wealth,” said Prof. Srinivasulu. “The presence of diverse bird species—many of them endangered or rare—indicates the health of the environment and showcases Telangana’s potential as a hub for bird conservation.”

Research Backed by Decades of Observation

The data was compiled through decades of fieldwork, community support, and information sourced from platforms like eBird and iNaturalist. The study explored birdlife in forests, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural fields, and even urban lakes, presenting a nuanced picture of how birds adapt to various habitats.

Sriram Reddy emphasized that the bird species catalog is not limited to researchers. “It is a valuable resource for students, nature enthusiasts, educators, and policymakers. We hope it inspires more people to observe, document, and protect the birds around them.”

Call for Conservation and Public Awareness

Prof. Srinivasulu stressed the importance of habitat protection, calling on the government and the public to support biodiversity. “Birds are facing increasing threats from habitat destruction, urbanization, and climate change. Identifying and conserving their habitats is now more critical than ever.”

He added that the report should serve as a wake-up call for policymakers to integrate conservation priorities into urban and rural development plans.

Osmania University Lauds the Achievement

Osmania University Vice-Chancellor Prof. D. Ravinder Kumar Moluguram applauded the researchers for their dedication and long-term commitment. “This study not only enhances the academic prestige of our university but also strengthens Telangana’s position as a biodiversity hotspot.”
