New Delhi / Hyderabad, July 28 (Maxim News) : Telangana has urged the Centre to sanction 11,56,915 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY G) to address the housing needs of eligible rural families. The request was made during a meeting with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
The state also sought the inclusion of additional livelihood activities under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), citing the impact of El Nino conditions on rural employment. Telangana said the lack of agricultural work has affected the livelihoods of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, small and marginal farmers, and agricultural labourers.
The Telangana government requested the Centre to allow several agriculture and livelihood related works under MGNREGS. These include the development of vegetable trellises, fodder plots, mulberry plantations, silkworm rearing sheds, kitchen gardens for leafy vegetables and vegetables, and bamboo plantations on farmers’ lands.
The proposal aims to create sustainable income opportunities for rural households while generating employment during periods of low agricultural activity.
The state also urged the Centre to permit beneficiaries constructing houses under PMAY G to receive up to 90 days of wage employment under MGNREGS, similar to the provision being implemented under Telangana’s Indiramma Housing Scheme.
According to the state government, extending MGNREGS support during house construction would provide financial assistance to beneficiaries, reduce the burden of construction costs, and improve rural employment opportunities.
The requests were submitted to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for consideration as part of Telangana’s efforts to strengthen rural housing and livelihood support. (Maxim News)
