Hyderabad, May 18: Fresh details have emerged from the ongoing negotiations between United States and Iran, with Iranian media reporting that Washington has placed five key conditions for moving forward with peace talks.
According to reports published by Iranian media outlets, the US has demanded that Iran hand over nearly 400 kilograms of enriched uranium and restrict operations at some of its nuclear facilities.
The reports further claimed that the US refused to provide compensation for damages caused during the conflict or earlier sanctions. Washington also reportedly declined to release at least 25 percent of Iran’s frozen overseas assets.
Iran peace talks face deadlock
Iranian media also stated that the US has not guaranteed that future attacks would not take place. Reports said American negotiators did not offer major concessions in response to Iran’s proposals aimed at ending the conflict.
Media reported that the talks have reached a deadlock because both sides continue to insist on their own conditions.
Iran reportedly placed several preconditions for any agreement. These include ending military action in the region, lifting sanctions on Iran, releasing frozen Iranian funds, compensation for war related losses, and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump recently rejected Iran’s reported 14 point peace proposal. Following that, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that American taxpayers would face consequences if Washington failed to accept Tehran’s proposal.
The developments come amid continuing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and wider geopolitical instability in West Asia.
