Earthquake Of 6.3 Magnitude Shakes Northern Afghanistan

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan early Monday, shaking wide areas of the region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor, which jolted residents shortly after midnight, caused concern but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The USGS said the quake’s epicentre was located 22 kilometres west-southwest of Khulm. It had a depth of 28 kilometres and struck at 12:59 am local time. Authorities and local residents were assessing the situation across northern provinces, where tremors were strongly felt. The epicentral area is known for its vulnerability to seismic activity due to its tectonic location.
This latest quake comes as Afghanistan continues to face the devastating aftermath of previous earthquakes in recent years. On August 31, 2025, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake near the eastern border with Pakistan killed more than 2,200 people. Earlier, on October 7, 2023, another 6.3 magnitude quake followed by powerful aftershocks left at least 4,000 people dead, according to the Taliban government.
Seismologists have repeatedly warned that Afghanistan lies in one of the most seismically active regions in Asia. Many of its rural areas consist of poorly constructed homes that are easily damaged during strong tremors. However, in this latest event, there were no immediate indications of major destruction. Local authorities and relief teams were expected to monitor the situation further through the day.
The Afghan government and aid agencies remain on alert, mindful of the country’s fragile infrastructure and limited emergency response capacity. Meanwhile, regional agencies continue to record aftershocks and urge residents to remain cautious.
