Hyderabad, May 24: Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Banjara Hills, successfully removed a massive 20 centimetre kidney tumour from a 53 year old patient from Kurnool.
The hospital announced on Sunday that the tumour, described as pumpkin sized, had occupied the entire right side of the patient’s abdominal cavity and severely displaced his intestines.
The patient approached AINU after suffering from abdominal swelling, weakness and loss of appetite for several weeks.
Following detailed examinations and scans, doctors identified a huge tumour arising from the patient’s right kidney. Medical experts said the condition required immediate surgical intervention because of the tumour’s size and pressure on nearby organs.
Complex Surgery Successfully Performed At AINU
A team led by Dr Purnachandra Reddy and Dr Rajesh Kumar Reddy first stabilised the patient before conducting a highly complex Open Radical Nephrectomy procedure.
Doctors said the surgery required careful planning and exceptional precision because of the tumour’s enormous size and difficult position inside the abdomen.
The medical team carefully identified and divided critical blood vessels before safely removing the tumour along with the affected kidney.
Hospital officials stated that the surgery was successfully completed without major complications.
Tumour Confirmed As Cancerous
After the operation, the patient recovered well under close medical supervision.
Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed that the tumour was cancerous, doctors said.
Dr Rajesh Kumar Reddy explained that the case was particularly challenging due to the sheer scale of the tumour and the pressure it had placed on surrounding organs.
He added that timely surgical intervention played a crucial role in preventing further complications and improving the patient’s recovery chances.
The hospital said the successful surgery reflected the advanced surgical expertise and specialised urology care available at AINU for handling critical kidney and urological conditions.
AINU doctors also advised people to seek early medical attention if they experience persistent abdominal swelling, unexplained weakness, appetite loss or urinary complications, as early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment outcomes in kidney related cancers.
