Hyderabad, May 23: An Indian Army Cheetah helicopter crashed in the mountainous region of Leh in Ladakh due to a suspected technical problem, officials said.
According to reports, a Lieutenant Colonel and two Majors were travelling in the helicopter when the accident occurred on May 20. However, all three officers escaped safely.
Officials said the incident came to light recently and an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Cheetah Helicopter Crash Raises Safety Concerns
The accident reportedly occurred in a remote high altitude area of Ladakh during operational movement.
A selfie reportedly taken by Major General Sachin Mehta along with the two other officers after the crash has gone viral on social media.
The Indian Army and Indian Air Force have been using Cheetah and Chetak helicopters for several decades, especially in high altitude and border regions.
Officials said these helicopters frequently face technical and safety related concerns due to ageing systems and outdated technology.
The Central government is already working on plans to gradually replace older helicopter fleets with advanced technology aircraft for improved operational safety and efficiency.
Authorities have not yet released detailed findings regarding the cause of the helicopter crash.
