Hyderabad, May 30: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to introduce electric vehicles into its official fleet as part of its efforts to promote sustainable and cost effective transportation. The decision comes amid rising fuel prices and growing emphasis on green mobility in urban governance.
The proposal was approved during a recent standing committee meeting chaired by Special Chief Secretary for Municipal Administration and Special Officer of the Tri Corporations, Jayesh Ranjan.
Under the first phase of the initiative, GHMC will procure 45 electric cars to replace vehicles currently being used on rental and Driver Cum Owner (DCO) arrangements. The new electric vehicles will be allocated for official use, including transportation for the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and other municipal officials.
GHMC Electric Cars Initiative Gets Approval
Officials said the move aims to reduce fuel expenditure, lower maintenance costs, and support Telangana’s broader environmental goals. The adoption of electric vehicles is also expected to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner urban transport within Hyderabad.
During the meeting, members reviewed and approved several infrastructure and civic development proposals across the city.
The committee cleared the widening of a 60 foot road from Chilla to Bhavani Nagar at an estimated cost of Rs 3.85 crore. It also approved the widening of a 40 foot road from Barabazar to Maulaka Chilla at a cost of Rs 5.99 crore.
In addition, the committee gave its approval for the replacement of underground electricity cables near Ali Cafe in Amberpet. Authorities also sanctioned the construction of a stilt plus two floor office building in Jalpalli Circle with an estimated expenditure of Rs 5.90 crore.
Infrastructure Projects and NTR Statue Proposal Approved
The standing committee also approved a proposal to issue necessary orders for the installation of a statue of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party founder N. T. Rama Rao at Maitrivanam Junction in Ameerpet.
Officials said the project will proceed after the completion of required administrative formalities and permissions.
Meanwhile, the standing committee of the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation discussed around 30 civic and development related agenda items during the meeting.
GHMC’s decision to procure electric cars reflects a growing trend among government bodies to adopt environmentally friendly transport solutions while improving operational efficiency and reducing long term costs.
The initiative is expected to support Hyderabad’s transition towards cleaner mobility and sustainable urban development in the coming years.
