No New B.Tech Seats Likely in Telangana’s First Phase of Counselling

Hyderabad, July 5 (Maxim News): Despite expectations of an increase in B.Tech seats across Telangana this academic year, it appears that no new seats will be available during the first phase of EAMCET counselling, according to sources from the higher education department.

The web options registration for engineering courses begins on July 6, but as of now, the final count of colleges and available seats has not been confirmed. Last year, there were 1,18,989 B.Tech seats across 175 engineering colleges in the state, including both Convener quota and Management quota (Category B).

This year, a few new engineering colleges have been approved at the Palamuru University campus and Husnabad under Satavahana University, which could bring around 528 additional seats with the implementation of the EWS quota. Furthermore, 7,000 seats that were approved last year by AICTE (following NOCs from JNTUH) are still pending state government approval.

Some colleges have also sought permission to increase their intake in core engineering branches, and AICTE has reportedly granted approvals. However, unless the Telangana government gives its nod soon, these seats won’t be available in the first counselling round.

The education department has also shown interest in establishing three off-campus centres, but officials say that adding new seats during the first phase is unlikely due to time constraints in web option registration. While web option entries are open until July 15, there’s a small chance that new seats might be added midway through the counselling process.

Students may have to wait until the second phase of counselling, scheduled for July 26 and 27, to see any seat expansion. Sources say that by then, a few hundred additional B.Tech seats may be added.
