Supreme Court Halts Mumbai Colleges' Ban On Hijab And Burqa
Delhi/Hyderabad, Aug 9 (Maxim News): The Supreme Court has issued an interim stay on the circular that prohibited the wearing of hijab, niqab, burqa, bangles, and caps in private colleges in Mumbai. The ruling comes in response to a growing controversy surrounding enforcing this ban by NG Acharya and DK Marathi Colleges.
Court Questions Discrimination Based on Religious Symbols
During the hearing, the Supreme Court drew a parallel with the tilak, a common religious symbol in India, questioning whether a student could be denied admission based on their use of such symbols. The Court has issued a notice to the college administration, seeking their response to the matter.
Students’ Plea Gains Traction in Supreme Court
The controversy initially began when nine female students challenged the ban in the Bombay High Court, only to have their plea dismissed. However, the Supreme Court’s recent intervention provides these students renewed hope for justice.
While placing an interim stay on the college’s decision, the Supreme Court emphasized the importance of not misusing its orders. The case will continue with the next hearing scheduled for November 18, where further arguments and responses will be considered.
This ruling underscores the ongoing debate over religious freedom and the right to cultural expression within educational institutions in India. (Maxim News)
