Shimla, May 31: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged ahead in the municipal corporation elections in Himachal Pradesh, winning three of the four civic bodies where results were declared on Saturday.
The elections were held in the municipal corporations of Mandi, Dharamshala, Solan and Palampur. While the BJP secured victories in Mandi, Dharamshala and Solan, the Congress won the Palampur Municipal Corporation.
Himachal Pradesh Municipal Elections See High Voter Turnout
Polling for the municipal corporation elections was conducted on May 17 using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and party symbols.
A voter turnout of 63.44 percent was recorded across the four municipal corporations. Dharamshala and Palampur registered 63.72 percent polling, while Mandi recorded the highest turnout at 68.78 percent. Solan witnessed 58.32 percent voting.
The results were announced alongside the counting process for Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad elections across the state.
The panchayat elections were conducted in three phases on May 26, 28 and 30. Unlike the municipal elections, these polls were held using ballot papers and without party symbols.
Despite rain and adverse weather conditions in several areas, the state recorded an impressive voter turnout of around 81 percent in the panchayat elections.
The results are being closely watched as an indicator of the political mood in the Congress-ruled state ahead of future electoral contests.
