Kolkata, May 30: Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has intensified his campaign against illegal immigration in West Bengal, drawing political attention over proposals related to border security, voter verification and identification of undocumented migrants.
The developments have sparked debate in the state, with political observers comparing some of the rhetoric surrounding immigration enforcement to policies advocated by Donald Trump in the United States.
According to reports, efforts are underway to facilitate the completion of a 27-kilometre border fencing project along sections of the India-Bangladesh border.
Border Security And Verification Measures Gain Focus
The slogan “Detect, Delete, Deport” has become a key talking point in discussions on illegal immigration and voter verification in the state.
Authorities are reportedly examining voter rolls and other official records to identify individuals who may not be eligible for inclusion under existing laws and regulations.
Reports also indicate that a holding facility has been established in Malda district for foreign nationals detained for alleged immigration violations. Officials said verification procedures, including biometric checks, are being conducted before any further action is taken under the law.
The discussion has also centered on the provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which reportedly grants broader enforcement powers to designated authorities in matters related to illegal immigration.
Officials have clarified that protections and exemptions available under applicable citizenship and refugee-related laws will continue to apply to eligible individuals from specified minority communities who entered India before the notified cut-off date.
Political reactions to the measures have been mixed, with supporters describing them as necessary for border management and opponents raising concerns over their implementation and potential impact on residents.
The issue is expected to remain a major political topic in West Bengal ahead of future electoral contests.
